Practicing for parenthood

We have few options on how to 'practice for parenthood', seminars, books, outings with friends, etc., just to mention a few. You hear the horror stories, the sleepless nights, the unexpected. I'm now taking a moment to pay homage to our home security system for helping us 'feel the pain' of parenthood, in the way of sleepless nights.

How so?

Apparently, our DSL decided it no longer liked to share the phone line with our home security alarm. However, they picked 2 AM, two nights in a row to duke it out. The first night, lots of 'trouble' alarms on the key pad, beep beeping, waking us wondering a sleepy daze if we were about to be robbed.

After a call to the hotline and a tech support lesson we shut off the 'trouble alarm'. It took more than an hour for our heartrates to return from the nether regions of the stratosphere, falling back asleep near 4 AM.

the alarm company sent a tech over Thursday night who worked for hours to fix the error, one they'd never seen before. Needless to say they couldn't solve it and we were in a wait and see mode.

Night 2? Waaaay more fun.

At the witching hour of 2AM... more beeps, then silence. We go back to sleep noting that the trouble alarm shut itself off finally. We slept... oh, 15 minutes? Long enough to be awoken by a doorbell. I'm terrified, who the hell rings the doorbell at 2 AM? It can't be good. So we call 911 to ask for a police drive by, they promptly tell us there's an ambulence out front.

Appears our security alarm, like HAL, took on a life of its own, sending out multiple false alarms for a medical emergency. A great feature if you need it, which at 2AM we did not. So we trudge downstairs, spend 15 minutes chatting with a few nice reps from our local fire department. They cancel the ambulence, we fill out reports and place a call to the alarm company, FURIOUS.

Back to sleep... shortly after 4 AM.

This is about the closest chance we get to practicing for parenthood, sleepless nights, dazed days... You take what you can get.

I say get rid of that thing... all those sleepless nights... I would rather it a child keeping me awake...

Rutrow...that's been a lotta beepin' going on. I agree, a kid would be a more pleasant way to be awakened.

I am so thankful for being used to minimal sleep. That has been one job hazard that will be very useful in the mama dept.
